Hebrews: A Book Study – Wk 1

Hebrews 1:1-3 (NLT)

1 Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.

1. His word will sustain you.

John 15:5 (NLT)

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:7 (NLT)

But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!

2. His word will defend you.

Hebrews 1:8-9 (NLT)

But to the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.
You rule with a scepter of justice.
You love justice and hate evil.
Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you,
pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.”

3. His word will stand the test of time.

Hebrews 12:25-29 (NLT)

25 Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven! 26 When God spoke from Mount Sinai his voice shook the earth, but now he makes another promise: “Once again I will shake not only the earth but the heavens also.” 27 This means that all of creation will be shaken and removed, so that only unshakable things will remain.

28 Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe. 29 For our God is a devouring fire.

Hebrews 2:1 (NLT)

1 So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.

Where your faith intersects with real life!

Each person shares a recent high and low from their life.

Review the message notes.

Big Idea: Jesus upholds, sustains, and propels all things by his powerful word.

Choose one or two questions for your Group to discuss as time allows.

▶ Read Hebrews 1:1-3. What do you need sustained in your life- hope, peace, forgiveness, belonging, or something else?

▶ Read Hebrews 1:8-9. How can we use God’s word as a defense?

▶ Read Hebrews 12:25-29. What are some shakable things that should be removed from our lives? What are some unshakable things that should remain?

Spend a moment in silence to consider your response, then share your decision with the Group.

Read John 15:5. Ask God what it looks like for you to remain in Him and bear much fruit. What is He saying to you?

Thank God for the highs and lift up the lows.

Read John 15:7. Share a prayer request with the group and pray together for God to move.
