Habits and Family Goals
I love the biblical teaching provided through Worship Center’s various ministries. In fact, the recent series Pastor Matt has been doing on the Book of Revelation has been excellent. A few weeks ago, he spoke about how our phones can be used for good, but can also damage our souls.
As good as the content we receive at church is, it will not impact us if it's not put into practice. Let’s face it. Hearing about what is good and right in God’s eyes and then actually doing it are two different things. The first is easy to talk about, but actually doing what we know to be right is very difficult. The Apostle Paul put it this way:
“I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 7:22-25a, NLT)
Paul understood the war within us and experienced it himself. Yet, in the end, his statement was, “Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.”
What was he referring to? He was referring to the reality that Christ lives in us through our repentance and faith in Him. Because of this, we have power to do things we did not think we could do.
Here is what I am proposing for you and your family: that you build habits within your family that lead each of you into the will of God. Hearing God’s Word and wise thoughts is great, but incorporating these things into your life requires new habits that build upon one another.
I recommend the book, Habits of the Household by Justin Whitmel Earley. A young couple I know has been building some great habits around mealtimes, screen time, family devotions, play, conversation, waking, and bedtimes. I encourage you to put this into your family’s library.
You can do hard things. In fact, you were built to do hard things.
Blessings,
— Pastor Eric (erics@worshipcenter.org)
