How to Read the Bible: God’s Word is Like a Mirror

Matt Mylin   -

A mirror is used for self-examination.

Some people glance at a mirror while others gaze into it. Those who glance at a mirror take a quick look at themselves and think either “Wow, I look good,” or “Well, it is what it is.” Those who spend time gazing into a mirror are generally not admiring themselves. Instead, they are doing self-examination. Our approach to God’s Word is similar.

Glancing at God’s Word is like hearing a Bible verse with no context and no desire for how it would apply. Consequently, it will not affect a person’s life. Gazing at God’s Word is when a person spends time reading it while carefully examining their own hearts and lives in light of the truth (Doing this transforms your life! How we approach God’s word like a mirror will impact how we grow as followers of Jesus.

James explains it this way: “But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it” (James 1:25).

Eight simple reminders to read God’s Word while carefully examining your heart and life in light of the truth:

1. God’s Word has the power to save your soul.

2. God’s Word leads to freedom.

3. God’s Word will counsel you.

4. God’s Word is perfect.

5. Look carefully at it.

6. Listen closely to it.

7. Do what it says.

8. Don’t forget it.
