Salt and Light

Jesus once said, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13a). Today a statement like this may be a bit confusing. However, in the time Jesus said this, salt was primarily used to preserve food. And, like we do today, they also used salt to make food taste better.

So, what needs to be preserved? In short, you are preserving God’s Word on the earth. You see, the Bible is filled with timeless truths and principles. And followers of Jesus choose to place themselves under these timeless truths and obey them. As timeless truths are obeyed, the people obeying these principles are preserving God’s truths by living them out and making a difference in the world.

For example, God’s Word calls us not to gossip (Proverbs 16:28). When you choose not to gossip, you are preserving a timeless truth and showing the world a better path. And by doing this, you are bringing real flavor to your relationships!

Jesus also calls you light.

YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD—LIKE A CITY ON A HILLTOP THAT CANNOT BE HIDDEN. NO ONE LIGHTS A LAMP AND THEN PUTS IT UNDER A BASKET. INSTEAD, A LAMP IS PLACED ON A STAND, WHERE IT GIVES LIGHT TO EVERYONE IN THE HOUSE. MATTHEW 5:14-15

Take a moment and think about this. When you placed your faith in Jesus, you were not only made new, but Jesus came to live inside you (John 15:4). Yes, Jesus, the Light of the World, now lives inside you! Therefore, when you walk into work, into a classroom, or change another diaper for your infant, the Light of the World is right there inside you, shining into your day-to-day, everyday world.

You see, as you choose Jesus moment by moment, your life becomes a guiding light not only for you but also for others. Yes, like you, others can potentially find and receive the very Giver of light, Christ himself, as they see his light in you.

It’s true. You are salt, and you are light — all because you placed your faith in Jesus and began this walk of faith with him. Keep on walking. You are making a difference!
