This year, we're excited to partner with GAiN (Global Aid Network®) to provide meals for people living in places experiencing famine, war, or displacement from unrest.
Rather than fuel a materialistic spirit over the holidays, we want to embrace the true spirit of generosity and help those who are hungry, fleeing their homelands, and feeling the sting of isolation.
On December 8 at Worship Center, we will pack 81,000 meals in two, two-hour packing sessions. This effort will engage 400 volunteers and will require raising $27,000 for the food. Worship Center will be taking an offering to raise this amount on November 25 and 26 during services, however, online giving is open now. Or text your giving amount to "GAIN" at 717.925.7288.
Who is GAiN?
As the humanitarian partner of Cru® (formerly Campus Crusade), Global Aid Network® (GAiN®) expresses the kindness of Jesus to people living in the toughest places on earth by relieving suffering, restoring dignity, and revealing hope. Using the distribution network built by the long-term connections of Cru, GAiN gets the food and supplies to where they are needed the most.
GAiN’s distribution center is located nearby in Mount Joy, PA.
Does this replace the Thanksgiving offering for local organizations?
We will be receiving an offering in our services November 25 and 26 for the GAiN event. In years past, we received an annual Thanksgiving offering to assist organizations in their care for those in need in our local community.
We will not be receiving this offering for local organizations in 2018 over Thanksgiving. Instead, it is being rescheduled.
In the non-profit world, there is a thing called the “summer slump." It occurs for most non-profits during the summer months and near the end of fiscal years. The time of the highest giving and volunteerism is in November and December.
At Worship Center we want to be strategic in our offerings, so we are scheduling our local ministry offering to better reflect the time of greatest need for our local organizations. Watch for it in the first half of 2019.
GAiN Event Details
The food packing project will happen in two sessions:
Session 1 - 10am - 12pm (200 volunteers)
Session 2 - 1pm - 3pm (200 volunteers)
This event would be great for small groups, youth, and young adults, or even the neighbor whose name you learned recently. Children age 4 and up are welcome with adult supervision.
We're excited to see Worship Center bustling with activity as we pack tens of thousands of meals for people in the direst of circumstances. We're sure that this service project will genuinely reflect the spirit of the season as we serve our world.
